A free, family-friendly Earth Day Celebration will be held at the Oak Ridge Civic Center on Saturday, April 24th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The mission of this event is to educate, encourage, and empower citizens to create a sustainable community. The festival will include many interactive exhibits, activities for all ages, presentations, food vendors, artisans, and live music. Details are available at www.orearthday.org.
Oak Ridge is fortunate to have a wonderful resource of hiking trails within the city limits. The Haw Ridge Greenway offers 20 miles of trails through many different plant communities. Join Kris Light and celebrate Earth Day Saturday, April 24, with a hike on the Haw Ridge peninsula to learn about the numerous spring wildflowers, ferns, lichens, fungi, fossils and any interesting critters we might meet along the trails. We will meet at 10:00 a.m. by the Haw Ridge kiosk on Edgemoor Rd. (if that hike is filled, we will have a second one at 1:00 p.m.). Participants should wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots and bring drinking water for the approximately 2-mile hike. If you would like, bring a camera, hand lens and wildflower identification guide if available. The hikes will be limited to 20 people each, please call and register with the Oak Ridge Parks and Recreation Department at 425-3450 . For more information on the wildflowers of Haw Ridge and a coordinating map, see the Haw Ridge link by clicking here.
