Summer ORCA

Summer ORCA (Oak Ridge City Aquatics) is a summer swim team for children ages 5-18. Swimmers must be able to swim 100 yards unassisted to participate. A swim test will be given the first day. The fee is $120.00 per swimmer and a non-resident fee of $10.00 if applicable. Swimmers will participate in workout sessions Monday - Friday from 11:30 to 1 p.m. and/or Monday and Wednesday evenings 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.at the outdoor pool. Swimmers will also participate in GKAISA league swim meets with dates and times TBA. Swimmers must have a signed release and fees paid to participate. Indoor and Outdoor Pool Swim Lessons

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department offers American Red Cross swimming classes through out the year as pool time and staffing permit. Participants must be between the ages of 6 months - adult. To find out more information about requirements for various swimming levels check out our Flow Chart. Registration is at the Civic Center Front Desk. Payment is due at the time of registration. For further information please call the Recreation and Parks Department, 425-3450 or email us at jgibson@cortn.org. Enrollment is limited. The cost is $60 for 8 thirty minute sessions. Classes are held four days a week for 2 weeks. There will be no make-up classes if cancelled for weather related reasons. There is also a once per year $10 non-resident fee for children who live outside of Oak Ridge. Check the Summer Aquatics Application below for specific times and days.

Guard Start

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department is offering the American Red Cross “Guard Start” program. Guard Start is a course to build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes, and skills for future lifeguards. This program also teaches prevention, fitness, response, leadership, and professionalism. The Guard Start program is for children 11 years of age to 14 years of age. Each participant must be a skilled swimmer, at least level V in American Red Cross swimming program. They must be able to swim the front crawl 25 yards continuously with correct breathing. Also be able to tread water for 1 minute, and submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet under water. The sessions are Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm. The fee is $85. Registration is at the Civic Center Front Desk. Payment is due at the time of registration. The last day each participant will be paired with a working lifeguard to experience the actual job responsibilities. The participants are responsible for providing their own lunch. JSI (Junior Swimming Instructors)

The JSI (Junior Swimming Instructor) program is designed for those too young to teach swimming lessons, but ready to do volunteer work and learn the responsibility of teaching. It is for children 12 years to 16 years to train and practice being swimming instructor assistants. Students should have achieved at least a level 4 in swimming skills. A swimming test the first day will include treading water, front and back floats, as well as general swimming abilities. The students will learn basic water safety around the pool and how to assist instructors in teaching swimming lessons. Hands on practice will ready the student to later become Water Safety Instructors. The program will be taught in 2 week sessions. Cost is $60 per session.

Regular Registration

Walk in registration for Summer 2012 will begin in May at the Civic Center Front desk and will continue until all spaces are filled.
